Avoiding Synthetic Colors in your Skin Care Products

Why should you be avoiding Synthetic Colors?

The majority of the FDA-approved coloring agents for foods and skin care products are synthetic. Synthetic colors are mainly coal-tar derivatives made from chemical compounds which are made when coal is distilled.

Dyes can be used in a variety of different products such as paints, cosmetics, clothes, inks, pesticides and medicines. Colorings found in skin care products are known as iron oxides. Iron oxides originate as minerals, but often react with chemicals at high temperature to isolate and refine the material.

There is still a great deal of controversy about the use of coal tar colors. Almost all these colors have been shown to cause cancer when injected into the skin of mice. Many people are allergic to coal tar colors. If you have a reaction to a skin care product there is a high probability that it could be the synthetic color causing the reaction.

Another major concern with the use of synthetic colors is an environmental issue. The industrial dye process involves a solution that is dumped into the rivers across the world, this leaves a dye sludge. Millions of tons are being dumped world wide!

When you are looking at the ingredients list in a skin care product you should be looking for colorants listed as FD&C, D&C, and Ext. D&C. FD&C. These colors are approved for the use in food, drugs. and cosmetics. You should be avoiding any product that has any of these in the ingredients list. When you are looking at Natural Skin Care Products you shouldn't assume they don't have synthetic colors in them. You must look at the ingredients list.

BTrue Naturals carries natural skin care products that do not contain synthetic colors. One natural skin care product that is one of my personal favorites is Pharmacopia's Hand Cream. It is none greasy and soaks into the hands very nicely.

If you have tried Pharmacopia's Hand Cream post a comment and give us some feedback.
